What to Wear for Your Family Photos: A Seasonal Styling Guide

Feel like yourself. Look like art. Let the magic begin before you even step in front of the camera.

Let’s be honest: figuring out what to wear is often the most stressful part of preparing for your family photo session. But here’s the good news—this doesn’t have to be a Pinterest-perfect, matchy-matchy affair. In fact, the most beautiful images often come from outfits that move, breathe, and feel like you.

So whether you’re planning a beachside shoot at golden hour, a cosy in-home newborn session, or a playful mini in the bush—here’s a gentle seasonal guide to help you feel confident and comfortable, with a few of my favourite styling tips woven in.

Start with the Mood, Not the Clothes

Before diving into textures and tones, pause for a moment.
Ask yourself: How do I want this session to feel?
Soft and nostalgic? Wild and carefree? Intimate and earthy?

When we work together, I always guide you through this during our creative consultation. The mood we create together informs the colour palette, the flow of your outfits, and the story we’re telling.
(You can read more about the magic of this process in my post: What a Maternity or Newborn Session Actually Looks Like)

Autumn & Winter: Warm Layers and Earthy Tones

The cooler seasons are a chance to embrace richness and texture—knits, corduroy, linen, and soft wools all photograph beautifully. Think warm neutrals like oat, rust, caramel, and olive green.

Mums might choose a long-sleeved wrap dress or wide-leg pants paired with a floaty blouse. Dads often look great in a simple henley or button-up layered with a casual jacket. For little ones, rompers, tights, beanies, and chunky knits are both practical and darling.

Styling tip: Winter light is softer and more directional—perfect for golden bush settings. Layering also allows for sweet little moments like wrapping your kids in a blanket or sharing a cuddle under a coat.

Spring & Summer: Light Fabrics and Gentle Movement

In warmer months, I lean into light, breathable fabrics like cotton, gauze, and linen. They move with the breeze, add softness to your images, and keep everyone comfortable—especially wriggly toddlers.

Flowy dresses in pastel, sand, or soft floral tones photograph beautifully. For the beach, barefoot always works. Bring along a spare set of clothes for the kids in case of splashes or sandy adventures.

What About Colour Palettes?

My biggest advice: coordinate, don’t match. Choose 2–3 complementary tones and let each family member express a little of their personality within that palette.

A timeless combo for year-round sessions: soft cream, warm beige, dusty rose, and muted olive. Add in natural textures like lace, woven fabric, or rattan accessories to give your look depth.

If you're feeling overwhelmed, I offer access to a thoughtfully curated Client Wardrobe—pieces that are not only flattering but photograph beautifully. I also share more ideas in my styling guide when you book.

Textures Over Patterns

Delicate textures (lace, gauze, ribbed knits) add visual interest without overwhelming the image. Steer away from large logos or busy prints, which can distract from your faces and connections.

Small florals or subtle stripes? Absolutely.
Graphic t-shirts and neon brights? Maybe save those for another day.

Let the Kids Be Kids

Soft and simple is best for little ones. Neutral-toned rompers, bloomers, muslin dresses, or overalls are not only comfortable but timeless. Let them go barefoot, bring a favourite toy or book, and keep backup options light and fuss-free.

Final Touches

  • Hair + Makeup: Go for enhanced natural. Think soft waves, dewy skin, and tones that bring out your features. If you’d like recommendations, I have a list of trusted local artists.

  • Accessories: Keep them minimal and intentional. Hats, earrings, scarves, or heirloom pieces can add character without stealing the spotlight.

  • Shoes: Or no shoes! Especially for beach or in-home sessions, barefoot adds such a natural touch.

Let Your Love Be the Focus

At the end of the day, no outfit will ever outshine the way your child looks at you.
The way your partner reaches for your hand.
The joy in your laughter, the gentleness in your touch.

That’s what I’m really here to photograph.
Everything else is just in service of that feeling.

So wear the dress that makes you feel soft and strong. Choose colours that remind you of sunsets or vintage postcards. Let go of the pressure, and lean into the story we’re telling—yours.

With love, always—
