The Best Sydney Locations for Maternity Photos (2026 Guide)

There's something about Sydney that just works for maternity photography. The light here is extraordinary - soft and golden in the mornings, warm and dreamy at dusk - and we have everything from wild, windswept beaches to lush parkland to sweeping sand dunes, all within reach of the city.

As a Sydney maternity photographer, I've spent years exploring this city with bump-to-belly clients, learning which spots photograph beautifully, which ones have great parking (trust me, this matters at 32 weeks), and which ones will give you that quiet, magic-hour feeling that makes your photos look like they belong in a magazine.

Here are my absolute favourites.

1. Long Reef Beach - Northern Beaches

Long Reef is one of those beaches that feels like it belongs to you. It's wide, wild, and unspoiled - with beautiful rock platforms, coastal heathland, and consistently gorgeous light. There's plenty of parking and it works well on weekends too, which makes scheduling so much easier.

The walk from the car to the beach takes about 10 minutes, so wear shoes on the way and we'll go barefoot once we're there. Bring a towel and a change of clothes. The seclusion here also makes it a great option if you'd like privacy for something more intimate.

Best time: Late afternoon
Vibe: Wild, coastal, private

2. Curl Curl - Northern Beaches

Curl Curl is one of my favourite sunrise locations on the Northern Beaches - the early morning light here is something else entirely. It's also wonderfully dog-friendly if you want your furry family member in the shoot, and the space makes it ideal for larger families.

It's best on midweek mornings when it's quieter, and there are bathroom facilities nearby. Come barefoot and bring a towel and change of clothes.

Best time: Sunrise
Vibe: Soft, open, golden

3. Milk Beach - Eastern Suburbs

Milk Beach is a secret that Eastern Suburbs locals guard closely, and I completely understand why. Tucked away with a short walk from the street, it's intimate, sheltered, and stunningly beautiful - with harbour views that look almost unreal in photographs.

It's best on midweek sessions when you'll have it largely to yourselves. Parking is limited on the street, so plan accordingly. Barefoot, towel and a change of clothes, and it offers real privacy for those wanting something more intimate.

Best time: Late afternoon
Vibe: Intimate, harbour-side, dreamy

4. Balmoral Beach - Lower North Shore

Balmoral has a timeless, golden quality that I never get tired of shooting. The calm harbour water, the grassy surrounds, the beautiful light - it feels relaxed and elegant at once. There are bathroom facilities here and paid parking nearby, which makes it a practical as well as beautiful choice.

Best on a midweek session when the beach is peaceful. Come barefoot and bring a towel and change of clothes.

Best time: Late afternoon
Vibe: Elegant, calm, classic Sydney

5. Centennial Park - Sydney City

For something lush and green, Centennial Park is endlessly beautiful and genuinely practical - easy parking, dog-friendly, and enough variety within the park to give real range in a single session. The grassy fields with their long grass are gorgeous for a flowing, organic feel, and the Rose Garden offers something more structured and romantic.

Shoes are needed here, and bring insect repellent in the warmer months. Perfect for larger families.

Best time: Morning or late afternoon
Vibe: Lush, romantic, timeless

6. Anna Bay Sand Dunes - Central Coast

If you want something truly dramatic and unlike anything else near Sydney, Anna Bay is worth the drive. The dunes are sweeping and otherworldly - the kind of landscape that makes every photo look extraordinary. It's about a 10-minute walk up from the car park, and barefoot is the only way to do it.

This one is especially magical for families with kids, who absolutely love running through the dunes. Privacy is easy to find, making it a beautiful choice for something more intimate.

Best time: Golden hour
Vibe: Dramatic, expansive, unforgettable

Tips for Choosing Your Location

Think about what feels like you - not just what looks beautiful in photos. The beach might be stunning, but if you're a lush-green-parkland person at heart, you'll feel more yourself in Centennial Park, and that always shows. If you're 32 weeks and the idea of a long walk makes you want to cancel, let's pick somewhere easy. Closer to home, more relaxed, better photos.

When we chat before your session, I'll help you choose - no pressure, no guessing.

FAQ

When should I book my maternity session?
Ideally between 28 and 34 weeks. Your bump is beautifully round but you're still comfortable and mobile. Book as soon as you know you'd like a shoot - my calendar fills quickly, especially in spring and autumn.

What should I wear?
I'll send you a full styling guide when you book. Flowy and fitted both work beautifully, and neutrals and earthy tones photograph well across most of these locations.

Can my partner and/or children be included?
Absolutely - just let me know when you enquire and we'll plan accordingly.

What if the weather is bad on the day?
We'll always have a backup plan - a more sheltered location, or we reschedule. We'll never go ahead if you're not comfortable.
