The Best Family Photography Locations on Sydney's Northern Beaches
Sydney's Northern Beaches is, in my completely biased opinion, one of the most beautiful stretches of coastline in the world for photography. The light up here is extraordinary - that particular golden, coastal glow that makes even the most ordinary moment look cinematic. The beaches are wild and gorgeous. The parklands are lush. And if you know where to go (and when), the crowds largely disappear and you have entire sweeping headlands to yourselves.
As a Sydney family photographer who shoots on the Northern Beaches regularly, here are the locations I return to again and again - and why.
1. Shelly Beach, Manly
Shelly Beach is my most-recommended Northern Beaches location for family sessions, and it earns that title every time.
Tucked just around the corner from busy Manly, it's calm, sheltered, and dramatically beautiful - turquoise water against sandstone headlands, with coastal walking tracks that give us gorgeous variety within a short walk. In the late afternoon, the light falls on this beach in a way that makes everything feel warm and golden.
It's also far less crowded than Manly itself, which means we can spread out, let the kids run, and not stress about strangers wandering into the background of every shot.
Best time: 1–2 hours before sunset
Best for: Families who want that iconic Sydney coastal look without the Manly chaos
Parking: Small car park off Marine Parade, Manly
2. Freshwater Beach & Headland
Freshwater is a classic for good reason. The beach is beautiful, the surf club has great character, but the real magic for family photography is the headland - those open grassy clifftops that catch the late afternoon light and give you sweeping ocean views as a backdrop.
It's brilliant for families with energetic kids who need to run. There's space, there are grassy slopes, there are rocks to explore. I'll often use the variety between beach, headland, and the surrounding streets to give a session real range and movement.
Best time: Late afternoon
Best for: Relaxed, lifestyle-feel family sessions; families with young kids who need to move
Parking: Car park on The Esplanade, Freshwater
3. Curl Curl Beach & Lagoon
Curl Curl is one of those spots that Northern Beaches locals treasure and visitors rarely find - which makes it perfect for photos. The beach is stunning and usually quiet by late afternoon, but it's the Curl Curl Lagoon area that I particularly love.
The lagoon is calm and glassy, surrounded by coastal scrub and walking tracks. In the golden hour, the reflections on the water are incredible, and the light through the coastal vegetation creates this beautiful, dappled warmth. It's also fabulous for families with toddlers who want to paddle without the waves.
Best time: Late afternoon, particularly in autumn and winter when the light is especially soft
Best for: Families who want something a little different; toddlers who love water but find the ocean too big
Parking: Off Carrington Parade, Curl Curl
4. Narrabeen Lake & Surrounds
For something lush, green, and completely different from the beach, Narrabeen Lake is a gem. The lake, the surrounding parkland, the wooden jetties, and the cycle tracks give you an incredibly varied backdrop - and the light here at golden hour is soft and beautiful.
It's particularly great for older children and for families who want something that doesn't involve sand (because, let's be honest, sand has opinions and they're not always helpful). Also wonderful for families with dogs.
Best time: Morning or late afternoon
Best for: Green, pastoral, non-beach sessions; families with dogs; older children
Parking: Multiple car parks around the lake - very easy
5. Avalon Beach
Avalon has a particular magic that's different from the more suburban Northern Beaches further south. It's quieter, more relaxed, and has that beautiful Avalon village feel - the kind of place where you genuinely feel like you're a world away from the city.
The beach is stunning (and often quiet), but it's also worth exploring the surrounding areas - the rockpools, the coastal walks, the village streets with their beautiful light and character. This is the Northern Beaches destination for families who want something that feels genuinely special and unhurried.
Best time: Late afternoon
Best for: Families who want a relaxed, unhurried session; beach lovers who want less crowd; families from the upper Northern Beaches
Parking: Car park off Avalon Parade
6. Turimetta Beach
Turimetta is one of Sydney's lesser-known coastal secrets, and it's absolutely breathtaking for photography. To get there, you walk down a bush track from Warriewood - and what you arrive at is a wild, rocky, dramatically beautiful beach with almost nobody on it.
The volcanic rock formations, the untouched coastline, the colours - this is the location for families who want something genuinely extraordinary and a little adventurous. Not ideal if your kids are very young (the track and terrain require reasonable mobility), but for families with school-aged children, it's unforgettable.
Best time: Late afternoon
Best for: Adventurous families with older children; families who want dramatic, editorial-style photos
Note: Wear comfortable shoes and allow extra time to walk in
Tips for Your Northern Beaches Family Session
Arrive a little early. Kids take time to settle in. Give everyone 10 minutes to look around, touch the sand, eat a snack, and decompress from the car journey before we start.
Don't overhype it. The less you tell kids about "taking photos," the better. Tell them you're going to the beach and leave it at that.
Golden hour is everything. I'll always recommend the session timing based on the specific location and the time of year. Trust the timing - even if it means a later bedtime. It's worth it.
Bare feet are usually fine. Kids who aren't worried about shoes are usually more relaxed. Unless we're on a rocky stretch, leaving the shoes in the car is a good move.

FAQ
How far in advance should I book?
For Northern Beaches sessions, I'd suggest booking at least 6–8 weeks in advance - more if you're hoping for a spring or autumn session, which are particularly popular.
What if we live on the Northern Beaches but want to shoot somewhere else?
Absolutely fine - I shoot all over Sydney. The Northern Beaches is a home base but not a limit.
How do we choose between locations?
When you enquire, we'll have a chat about your family, your kids' ages, your style, and where you live - and I'll make a recommendation. You don't have to figure it out yourself.
Are dogs allowed at these locations?
Most of them, yes - Narrabeen Lake and Freshwater Headland are particularly dog-friendly. Just let me know you're bringing a furry family member and I'll factor that in.
What's the best season to shoot on the Northern Beaches?
All of them, honestly - but autumn (March–May) is my personal favourite. The light is golden and soft, the beach isn't too hot, and the crowds thin out nicely.
