What Is a Motherhood Session - And Why Every Mum Deserves One
Here's something I notice with almost every client I work with: mums are brilliant at being in every photo except their own.
They photograph their kids constantly. They're behind the camera at birthday parties, Christmas mornings, first days of school. And somehow, years go by, and when the family scrolls back through the phone looking for a photo of Mum - a real one, where she's present and beautiful and herself - there's almost nothing there.
A motherhood session is my answer to that.
So What Actually Is a Motherhood Session?
A motherhood session is a portrait session centred on you and your child (or children) - not as a "family shoot" in the traditional sense, but specifically celebrating the relationship between a mother and her kids.
It can happen at any stage: with a 6-month-old in your arms, a toddler who climbs all over you, a 4-year-old who still wants to be carried, or a 7-year-old who still sneaks into your bed on Sunday mornings. The age doesn't matter. What matters is that relationship - the one that's unlike anything else in either of your lives.
Motherhood sessions are usually:
Lifestyle-style - relaxed and natural, often outdoors at a beautiful Sydney location like the beach, parkland, or harbour foreshore
About connection - I'm not directing stiff poses; I'm capturing the way your child reaches for your hand, the way you laugh together, the look on your face when they call your name
Genuinely about you - you're not the backdrop. You're the subject.
Why Mums Keep Putting This Off (And Why You Shouldn't)
I hear a lot of reasons why mums haven't booked a session for themselves yet.
"I want to lose a bit of weight first."
"I'll do it once the kids are a bit older."
"I'm not really photogenic."
"It feels a bit self-indulgent."
I understand every single one of these. And gently, lovingly - I want to push back on all of them.
Your body, right now, is the one your child knows. The softness, the strength, the realness of it. These are the arms they fall asleep in. This is the lap they climb into. There's nothing to wait for.
Kids change so fast it's almost unfair. The version of your four-year-old who still fits perfectly in your lap? She's already half gone. A year from now she'll be different. The way your son says your name right now, in that particular voice - that won't last. A motherhood session captures the specific, fleeting, irreplaceable right now.
Loving yourself enough to be in the photos is not self-indulgent. It's a gift to your kids. One day they'll want to know what their mum looked like when they were small. Give them that.
What Does a Motherhood Session Look Like?
Every session is a little different, because every mum and every family is different. But here's a sense of what a typical session with me looks like:
We meet at a beautiful Sydney location - somewhere that feels meaningful to you, or somewhere I know will photograph gorgeously in the light we're working with. The Northern Beaches, Sydney Harbour foreshore, Centennial Park, Bronte - wherever feels right for you.
We spend an hour or so together, moving through a few different setups, but always keeping things relaxed and real. I give gentle direction where it helps, but mostly I'm watching for the in-between moments - the spontaneous ones - because those are almost always the most beautiful.
Younger children usually need snacks, a familiar toy, and a bit of time to warm up. I build that in. Older children often get into it surprisingly quickly - especially when they see how much fun their mum is having.
Who Is a Motherhood Session For?
Honestly? Any mum. But they're particularly meaningful for:
New mums with babies under 12 months - capturing those early months when you're deep in the tender, exhausted, overwhelming love of new motherhood
Mums of toddlers - this stage is so physical and so fleeting; these photos capture the beautiful chaos of it
Mums who missed their newborn shoot - a motherhood session with a 3-month-old or a 6-month-old is a beautiful way to document this season even if the newborn window has passed
Mums whose kids are getting older - you blink and they're six. Then ten. Don't wait.
Single mums - you are doing something extraordinary. You deserve to have that documented.
A Note About Being in Front of the Camera
Most mums I work with tell me they're nervous about having their photo taken. Some say they hate it. Some say they've always found it awkward.
And then, without exception, they see their gallery and they cry.
Not because the photos look different from how they expected. But because they look exactly like themselves. Laughing. Present. Real. In their body, in their life, with their child.
That's what I'm trying to give you. Not a perfect version of yourself. Just an honest, beautiful, true one.

FAQ
Where do you shoot motherhood sessions?
Mostly outdoors at beautiful Sydney locations - Northern Beaches, North Shore harbour foreshore, Eastern Suburbs parks and beaches. We'll choose a location that suits your vibe and where you live.
How long is a motherhood session?
Usually around 1–1.5 hours. Enough time to settle in, have some variety, and not exhaust the kids.
What if my child won't cooperate?
This is extremely normal and I'm very used to it. Some of the most beautiful images happen when a toddler is being a toddler. I'm patient, I'm playful, and I know how to roll with it.
Can my partner be in some of the photos too?
Of course - just let me know when you enquire and we can plan accordingly.
Can I do a motherhood session if I'm also pregnant?
Yes! A session that captures you with your existing child or children during pregnancy is a beautiful thing. We can incorporate your bump naturally.
